Natural history collections look like archives of a finished era. In practice they are among the most actively used research resources in wildlife science, for reasons their collectors never foresaw.
A specimen preserves more than a shape
A prepared bird or mammal carries tissue, feathers, bone and often the parasites that were on it, alongside a label recording date, location and collector.
The label is the part that makes it science. A specimen without a place and date is a curiosity, while one with both is a data point in a time series.
Because those attributes were recorded consistently for well over a century, collections constitute a distributed record of what lived where, verifiable against physical evidence.
New methods reach back into old material
Genetic sequencing from museum tissue lets researchers compare historical populations with current ones, revealing losses of diversity that no field survey could detect.
Chemical analysis of feathers and bone records diet and, through isotopes, the general region where an animal grew the tissue, allowing reconstruction of past movements.
Specimens have also been screened for pathogens to establish when a disease first appeared in a region, which is impossible without preserved material predating the outbreak.
Contaminant history is written in tissue
Concentrations of metals and persistent chemicals in preserved tissue document environmental exposure at the time of collection, decades before monitoring programs existed.
Comparing modern samples against historical ones is what establishes whether a substance is accumulating or declining after regulation.
Eggshells in collections served this role in an earlier era, and the same principle continues to apply to compounds identified more recently.
Collecting is now narrow and regulated
Modern collection requires permits, is limited to specific scientific purposes, and takes far fewer individuals than historical expeditions did.
Much new material arrives from salvage rather than active collecting, including window-strike casualties, roadkill and animals that died in rehabilitation.
Salvage material is biased toward whatever kills animals near people, which is a known limitation researchers account for rather than ignore.
Maintenance is the vulnerable part
Collections require climate control, pest management, cataloging and curators who know what is held, and none of that generates the grant income that new research does.
When budgets tighten, curatorial positions are among the first cut, and an uncataloged collection is functionally inaccessible even while physically intact.
Digitization has helped by making specimen records searchable worldwide, but it depends on the same staff whose positions are hardest to fund.
