A reserve twice the size of its neighbour does not necessarily hold twice the wildlife. What determines long-term survival is usually whether animals can move between the areas that already exist.
Isolation is the problem a corridor solves
Once a reserve is ringed by farmland, fencing and roads, it behaves like an island. The animals inside breed only with each other, and the population steadily loses genetic variety.
That loss is invisible at first. Fertility slips, resistance to disease narrows and juvenile survival falls, which together show up as a population that has quietly stopped growing.
A corridor restores the movement that once happened without anyone planning it. Even a few animals crossing each generation is enough to keep the genetics of both sides linked.
Area alone does not create carrying capacity
Habitat quality varies enormously across any protected area. A large reserve may consist mostly of terrain that a given species cannot feed or breed in, so the usable portion is far smaller.
Adding land at the edge often adds the least valuable habitat, because the fertile valleys and permanent water were converted to agriculture long before the reserve was drawn.
Connecting two areas of good habitat, by contrast, effectively pools their capacity. Animals can shift between them as rainfall, grazing and predation pressure change from season to season.
Corridors also spread risk
A single population confined to one place shares one fate. A disease outbreak, a severe fire or a drought concentrated in that valley can remove most of the animals within a season.
Where movement is possible, a local collapse becomes a local event. The vacant habitat is recolonised from neighbouring areas rather than staying empty until people intervene.
This is why conservation planners talk about populations in the plural. Several connected groups are more durable than one large group in a single block of land.
Why corridors are harder to secure than reserves
Corridors run through land that people use, which makes them politically awkward. They rarely justify full protection on their own, since no single stretch holds a spectacular concentration of animals.
They also need only a narrow band of habitat, so the work is often about easements, land-use agreements and underpasses rather than about buying and fencing large blocks.
The result is that corridors depend on negotiated arrangements with many landowners, and each of those agreements can lapse. Maintaining a corridor is a continuing task, not a single purchase.
What makes a corridor actually function
A route only works if the target species will use it. Width, cover, water and the absence of persistent disturbance matter more than the line drawn on a map.
Species differ sharply in what they accept. A large carnivore may cross open ground at night, while a forest primate will not leave continuous canopy at all.
Monitoring therefore matters as much as construction. Camera traps and tracking data show whether animals are crossing, and a corridor that no animal uses is habitat with a hopeful label.
